Review -- Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments (Barely Brazen, Improper Copper, Breaking Bronze & Downtown Brown)

Lately, I've gotten back into playing with my old school bareMinerals loose eye shadows.

I have a bunch of them that I've collected over the years -- they actually have their own drawer in my makeup collection -- but I have neglected in them recent years simply because they can be kind of messy and it just seems easier to grab some pressed shadows and go.

However, I remembered a shadow that I'd always loved (Night Owl, in case you're curious. I don't think it's available any longer, but it's a gorgeous shimmery cool brown.) and went digging around the drawer for it and found a bunch of other old favorites that I'd forgotten about as well.

And I'd forgotten how these loose pigment type shadows always seem to last longer on my lids than pressed shadows.

I mean, I use the same primer that I always do, but the loose shadows seems to stay bright and bold much longer than my other shadows.

Maybe that's just me.

So I was in the middle of my renewed love affair with loose shadows when I walked into CVS and saw the new Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments.

I had actualy heard about them a few months back before they'd been released, and didn't really anticipate buying any since I hadn't been using the pigments that I already had in my collection.

But then I was all smitten with loose shadows again and the Maybelline Pure Pigments just looked so pretty.

They are available in 12 shades, some of them super bright and vibrant, but I decided to go with the more natural, wearable shades since I figured I'd get more use out of them.

I choose Barely Brazen, a shimmery golden champagne; Improper Copper, a shimmery light reddish brown; Breaking Bronze, a shimmery light golden bronze; and Downtown Brown, a shimmery light golden brown.

There aren't many drugstore pigments like these on the market, so I don't have much experience with lower end loose shadows. But I have to say, I don't notice a huge difference in quality between the Maybelline Pure Pigments and my bareMinerals loose shadows.

They definitely offer concentrated pigmentation, are smooth and easy to blend, and last all day on my eyes without fading if I wear a primer underneath. Like the bareMinerals shadows, you can apply them wet for a more intense look and I don't have any issue with flaking or streaking.

Loose shadows can definitely lead to more fallout than pressed shadows -- though you can avoid some of that by really swirling your brush into the pigment, tapping off the excess, and patting the shadow onto your eye instead of swiping -- but I don't notice any more fallout with these pigments than other higher end loose shadows.

All of the shades that I picked up are lovely - Barely Brazen is ideal as an inner corner highlight or as a light lid color; Improper Copper is gorgeous for blue or green eyes, as are Breaking Bronze and Downtown Brown.

If you're not a fan of more natural colors like these, there are also bright blue, green, pink and purple shades so there's bound to an option that floats your boat.

I bought the Pure Pigments in my local CVS for $6.99 each. You receive 1.5 grams of product in each jar, which will probably last a lifetime.

While I'm not particularly tempted by any of the other shades currently available, I would certainly purchase more of the Pure Pigments if additional shades that tickled my fancy were released.

I would definitely recommend these pigments if you're a fan of loose shadows. If you've never tried a loose shadow before, I think these are a great, budget-friendly way to experiment.

Have you tried the Maybelline Color Tattoo Pure Pigments?  Are you a fan of loose shadows in general?
