Product Review -- Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Eye Shadow

I'm a pretty big fan of Josie Maran skin care and makeup products.

They're all designed to combine high performance with healthier ingredient,s and for the most part, they're pretty successful.

Of course, there are some duds, but that's to be expected in any brand's lineup.

Many of the Josie Maran products contain argan oil, but recently, the brand's been incorporating coconut water into some formulas as well. In particular, I absolutely love the Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelees, which give such a pretty, natural flushed look to the cheeks.

That's why I was so interested in trying the Coconut Watercolor Eye Shadows.

Unlike the Cheek Gelees, which have a gel or cream texture, the eye shadows are actually a liquid formula. The pigment does have tendency to separate from the coconut water, so you have to be sure to shake them up well before using them.

They come in small glass bottles that have top with a sponge tip applicator attached to apply the shadow.

Because of the coconut water in the formula, I was sort of expecting these shadows to be somewhat sheer -- the Cheek Gelees definitely are. But these shadows are seriously pigmented. With a single swipe of the sponge tip applicator, you can seriously rich, metallic color.

But if you're looking for a softer look, you can just apply a single dot to each lid and blend them out for a kind of water color effect.

It's also worth noting that appears to be some difference in intensity between shades. I have two, Beach Sand, a light bronze, and Rio De Rose Gold, a rich rose gold, and Rio De Rose Gold is definitely more pigmented than Beach Sand.

I use these shadows all on their own with just a matte powder shadow in the crease, and that's a lovely look. But these also work well as colored bases -- that provides a very intense metallic look, though, so it's probably best for evenings out.

On their own, they last a seriously long time too -- all day, really -- though I always use a primer under them.

The shadows comes in a variety of shades, so if there's one that appeals to you, I definitely recommend giving these a shot.

The shadows retail for $18 each. You can purchase them at Sephora or the Josie Maran website.

Have you tried the Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Eye Shadows? What do you think of the formula?

  1. This is definitely an interesting product - the only thing that would hold me back from buying it are the applicators. I do have shadows with these and rarely use them. I don´t even know why. Guess I´m a brush and hands kind of girl :)

    1. No, I totally hear you. I'm not a fan of the applicator either. In fact, one of them actually fell off inside the bottle and I had to use pliers to fish it out. Incredibly annoying. Probably a little squeeze tube type package would be a better option -- you could squeeze out a dot on the back of your hand and use your finger or a brush.

    2. It really fell into the bottle? O_o have you contacted the company about this? For 18$ there sure seems to be something wrong with this. Or maybe it´s a "monday product" (is there a proper english term for this?).

    3. I didn't contact them -- I probably should have, but I get lazy and if I can fix it myself, I usually just let it go. But I agree... for $18, you shouldn't have to worry about the applicator falling off. :P

  2. I've been meaning to give these a go but for $18, I'd rather buy a palette or powder eyeshadow; I'm a huge klutz and I'd probably drop and spill this all over the place >.<

    1. They are difficult to spill because there's kind of a stopper mechanism in the neck of the bottle that keeps the liquid from going all over the place. But I do agree with you -- if the choice is between these and a powder shadow or palette, I'd go with the powder just because they're more versatile.
