Product Review -- Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft-Matte Hydrating Foundation

As someone with dry skin, finding a foundation at the drugstore that I really love can be tough.

Even formulas that aren't drying don't really do much to smooth dry patches, so they often wind up looking cakey and patchy.

It's not a good look.

So I was excited when I heard that Maybelline was coming out with a hydrating foundation. Its soft matte finish was also intriguing, because hydrating and matte aren't typically two words that go together on makeup labels.

The Dream Velvet Soft-Matte Hydrating Foundation is definitely unique in the claims that it makes. The company describes it as a gel-whipped foundation that is its first hydrating matte foundation that provides velvet smooth perfection.

It comes in a squeeze tube that makes it easy to squeeze out just the right amount. The foundation definitely has a thicker consistency so the tube packaging is a great fit.

However, despite the thickness, it has an almost light texture, which may be due to the whole gel-whipped thing.

Maybelline sells a specially designed sponge to apply this foundation -- I passed on buying it because I saw several reviews that described how hard it was -- so I tried applying it with a Beauty Blender, which worked well, but I've had similar results with a synthetic buffing brush too.

The key to applying this foundation, no matter what method you prefer, is not applying too much -- a little bit truly goes a long way. Personally, I find that a pea-sized amount works best. If I apply more than that, it settles in pores and fine lines and looks cakey.

Maybelline describes the coverage as medium, and I'd agree with that. I still need a concealer to cover major dark spots, but it covers and evens out pretty much everything else.

I purchased two shades, Warm Porcelain 05 and Porcelain Ivory 10, because I wasn't sure which one would be the better watch. I usually always go with the lightest shade, but the "Warm" in the name scared me a little.

Porcelain Ivory is definitely too dark for me, but it also seems pretty warm. Warm Porcelain is warmer than I'd like and maybe even a hair too dark, though I can get it to work (with another new product that I'll be reviewing shortly. Pale skinned folks will be very interested!)

That said, while I like this foundation, I don't love it as much as I was hoping.

I don't find it to be that hydrating, so I need to pair it with a hydrating primer to ensure that I don't start looking dry and flaky over the course of the day. Maybelline does say that the foundation is best for normal to combination skin, so maybe in winter, my skin is just a little too dry for the foundation.

And personally, most days, I prefer a dewy or glowing finish for my foundation, so this formula isn't going to be my first choice.

Still, I think that I might like this foundation more in the summer when my skin tends to get closer to normal, so if your skin is normal or combo, I do think this might be a nice option.

It retails for approximately $10.99 wherever you can find Maybelline products.

Have you tried the Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft-matte Hydrating Foundation? Are you a fan?'

    1. They are definitely too warm in my opinion too. If makeup companies can't make a variety of undertones in the various foundation shades, I don't know why they don't just go with neutral options. Those would be a better fit for most people. Going too yellow, too warm, too pink, etc. just makes them impossible for so many of us to wear.

And I'm going to try to get to a review of that other product ASAP. ;)
