Review -- Rimmel Show Off Lip Velvet

Matte liquid lipsticks are all the rage these days, but I've been reluctant to jump on the trend.

That's because, as a general rule, I don't particularly like matte lipsticks -- they're just so drying and require too much work to make look good -- and I especially don't like liquid versions.

On my lips, they always seem to look dry and cracked, no matter how much I moisturize and exfoliate my lips.

But I'm weak when it comes to makeup and seeing all the new liquid lipstick products out there gets me a little intrigued.

I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a product that I wasn't sure I'd like, though, so when I was at Walgreen's recently, I decide to give Rimmel's Show Off Lip Velvets a try.

Now, right off the bat, I've got to say that I'm disappointed in Rimmel's color range for these products. My Walgreen's only had them in 5 shades so I thought maybe they were missing some, but on Rimmel's website, it appears that those are the only shades that there are.

I feel like with most liquid lipsticks, the colors typically run dark. Darker shades are tough for me to pull off because I'm so pale, so I tend to shy away from them. I wanted something lighter, more 'everyday' wear, so I wear with Atomic Rose.

Don't let the name fool you, though -- the shade really isn't rosy. It's kind of a coral-y pink.

Like all liquid lipsticks, it comes in a tube with a doe-foot applicator. This one is slightly pointed at the tip to make applying along the edges of your lips easier, and the bottom is flat with a little indent in the center so you get plenty of product when you apply.

The formula definitely feels a little dry, but it doesn't feel heavy or cake-y on the lips so it's not uncomfortable. The wear time is good, as it always seems to be with these matte liquid lipsticks that dry down -- I go five or six hours without reapplying if I'm not eating.

The downside is that, just like with the rest of the matte liquid lipsticks, the Show Off Lip Velvet isn't very forgiving if you've got dry, chapped areas or a lot lines in your lips -- they're all going to show up like nobody's business. You'll want to exfoliate really well and apply a lip conditioning product a little while before you apply the product to get the best look.

Personally, I don't like the matte look enough to be willing to put up with that effort ever day.

If you are, then I think these are a nice product to try -- especially because they're only about $6, depending on where you purchase them. They're available at Walgreen's, CVS, Walmart, Ulta, and anywhere else you can buy Rimmel products.

Have you tried the Rimmel Show Off Lip Velvets? Are you a fan? What's your favorite matte liquid lipstick?
